When To Hire A Roofer

Schedule an inspection
• You know the roof on your home has never been replaced in the 15 years you’ve owned it. Is it time to have it checked out by a professional roofing contractor?
• Springtime comes and you notice a stain on your ceiling. How about now? Is it time to call a roofer?

When to Hire A Professional Roofer

There are a few different reasons you may choose to call a professional roofer…
  • Installation of a new roof
  • Repair of an existing roof
  • Maintenance or inspection of an existing roof
Remember that independent contractors often specialize in installing new roofs. But they may not have much experience repairing roofs. In addition, a contractor who has experience repairing asphalt shingle roofs may not have experience repairing slate, copper or zinc roofing material.

Blackrock Slate is experienced in both installation and repair, of many specialized roofing materials, like copper, zinc and  EPDM.

Can My Roof Be Repaired?

If your roof is sagging, leaking or damaged in some other way you may be able to have a professional fix it. Many contractors will repair a roof that they installed, but they may be more hesitant to work on one that was installed by someone else. Keep this in mind when deciding who to call. Roof leaks should not be put off. The worst a contractor can say is that your roof can not be fixed, but waiting can cost much more if sheathing, trusses or drywall is damaged due to a leak.

Do I Need A New Roof?

A traditional asphalt shingle roof will last 20 to 30 years, and then needs replacement. Other materials like standing seam metal (steel, copper or zinc) or slate tile can last much longer.

Although a new roof is a major investment, it also pays dividends. The peace of mind of having a leak free roof saves actual dollars. As we already mentioned, a leaking roof can cause damage that costs far more than a new roof does. In addition, the roof is the first thing a home inspector checks when a person puts their house on the market. So a new roof can substantially raise the value of your property.

If you decide to hire a professional roofing company, confirm the following…
  • The company or contractor has experience with new roof construction
  • They are available to coordinate with any other contractors working on your home
  • They have experience in the type of roofing material you prefer

What Can I Do To Make My Roof Last Longer?

New roof installation, replacement and repair are not all that roofing companies do. Many also do roof inspections and maintenance. Blackrock Slate offers free roof inspections. We will take the time to help you understand the health of your roof and what can be done to prolong it’s life. And if it’s time to replace it, we will provide a free consultation to help decide on the best roofing material for your home, as well as a free cost estimate.
